WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Charles Rangel introduced a bill in Congress Tuesday to reinstate the military draft, saying fighting forces should more closely reflect the economic makeup of the nation.

"Those who love this country have a patriotic obligation to defend this country," Rangel said. "For those who say the poor fight better, I say give the rich a chance."

Kerry and Charles still continue to beat the drum that the disadvantaged and stupid are the ones fighting our wars.......perhaps they should view the military statistics of our fine men fighting abroad. THESE TWO ARE STUPID BIG MOUTHS WHO CONTINUALLY USE THE LIBERAL SCARE TACTICS TO TRY AND MAKE A POINT. A DULL ONE AT THAT!

Americans better wake up and look at who they are putting in office.

The American people will demand that our politicians make wiser wartime decisions if we have a draft. Plus, the military is frightening low on troops right now. You can't have it both ways; if the world is as dangerous as you always like to say, we will need many more troops to fight all around the world and here at home.

Also, you can pretend that our military is primarily filled with college graduates if you'd like to, but those are not the facts. Pointing this out does NOT suggest that the troops are “stupid”, as you and the GOP are trying to suggest. It simply points out that many people have entered the military because they did not have a lot of other employment or educational options. That’s not to say that these military personnel should not be respected, but it is something that needs to be looked at. With manufacturing jobs (the best jobs for people without college degrees) going to other countries at an amazing pace, we now have a segment of our populace whose options are getting thin. You choose to ignore this because it reflects poorly on the economic situation in the country (and because the GOP tells you what to think).

If freedom is so precious to you that you think our people need to die for it for other people to enjoy it (even when the other people don’t seem to be standing up and fighting for it themselves), why argue against a military draft? The Bush doctrine has morphed into a “fight for other people’s freedom” policy, and there are many oppressed people on the planet. If we follow him down the rabbit hole we’ll be needing all the troops we can muster.

Because the military draft takes away the freedom to choose as to what one wants to do with their life.

I for one, feel much more secure, knowing that the men who fight for us have chosen this because they are so moved to make this decision.

Living so close to FT Bragg; I know that these men feel safer and more secure fighting next to a person who also has chosen this career path.

They are a tough bunch! Let em loose and we win!

They do a great job, but there are not enough soldiers in the military. Listen to the generals. Plus, both World Wars were won by soldiers enlisted via conscription (as well as volunteers).

Also, why did you dodge the "stupid troops" counterargument? Could it be because it indefensible?

I guess it depends on what general you are listening to........

but with you it wouldn't matter; you are a defeatist, name caller, and look so negatively on most everything.....

sad statements for a sad life

You continue to dodge the "stupid troops" issue, but since you have no ground to stand on I understand why. Plus, you spend the majority of your energy is calling people of differing political views as yours all kinds of names, or accusing them of evil things, so lose you "holier than thou" attitude. You are harmful to the entire political atmosphere.

Mainly because I can't figure out where you are going with the stupid troops issue.

I find liberals left and right can be quoted referring to the military as an only chance for the stupid and poor ... and that is just not how it is my friend.

The point is simple: no one is saying that the troops are stupid. The GOP and you want it to appear that Kerry meant to say that (and the GOP website still maintains that he refuses to apologize, even though he has many times), but the underlying truth is being swept under the carpet by you all. Read my first paragraph again about how there are fewer choices for young high school graduates who either did not get the grades for college or simply cannot afford to go. For Christ’s sake, we are allowing gang members and white supremacists into the service now because we need soldiers so badly. Go look it up for yourself. My problem with you and the officials in the GOP is that you want to look past this point just to make some political gain on Kerry (who I could care less about). You want to act as if the military is filled with Rhodes Scholars and valedictorians. I’m not saying that the soldiers are stupid. Reducing the argument to that level is dishonest and manipulative. Add to that the fact that you are vehemently against the draft and it appears that you have your head up your ass. Where do you suggest we get the troops to police the world the way Dubya wants us to do?

I don't think GW wants to police the world LOL.

Why argue against the draft? Mainly because the professional soldier does not want an amature sitting next to him in a tank, or covering his back.

I think you're wrong about W. He's a nation builder, regardless of what he stated in 2000. He has our boys dying over there because the weak ass Iraqis won’t step up for themselves. How long should we continue to do the job of the Iraqis?

Also, you act as if "professional" soldiers spent their entire lives training to become killers. Drafted soldiers would receive the same training (physical and mental) that volunteers receive. Are you calling Vietnam vets a bunch of amateurs compared to today's military (putting all technological advances aside)? Are you calling them “stupid”?

So it’s fair to say that you believe that our countries best and brightest are not found in colleges, but in the Marines, is that correct? That seems to be what you are arguing in your attempt to pin the “troops are stupid” label on everyone else.
