Italy: Europe's Emerging Platform for Islamic Extremism
By Kathryn HaahrInvestigations by the Italian security services since 2001 indicate that Italy has become a platform for al-Qaeda associated terrorist operations in Europe and Iraq. Italy's Muslim population is concentrated in Milan, with an estimated 100,000 Muslims residing in the northern city. Not surprisingly Milan appears to be the base of Italy's extremist network, which has connections to other Islamic radical groups in Europe, specifically in Spain and Germany. The primary focus of the Islamists' activities in Italy appears to have been that of a staging ground for recruiting CLICK HERE FOR FULL STORY

Kenyan Media Urges Caution in Resolving Somalia Crisis
By Sunguta WestOn September 24, Somalia's Islamic Courts Union (ICU) moved further south and took control of the port city of Kismayo near the Kenyan border. With the Islamist movement moving closer to Kenya, public debate in the country is raging. The Kenyan press has warned the government to tread carefully now that the ICU is approaching its eastern border. Consensus has grown in Kenya that the government, which many consider the only neutral player in the crisis, should be concerned only with protecting its borders and should not take sides in the conflict. This concern stems from the fact that in each instance when the crisis in Somalia has flared, Kenya has been flooded with Somali refugees streaming across the border. This year alone, Kenyan media reports that about 25,000 refugees have fled Somalia into Kenya (Daily Nation, September 28). In addition to having to settle these refugees, there is also a genuine security concern that radical elements could filter from Somalia into Kenya. The Kenyan government has warned Somali actors not to attempt to smuggle weapons across the border into Kenya, and there is also concern that foreign terrorist elements could use the refugee flow to smuggle operatives and military supplies into Kenya in order to conduct attacks against Western interests there.

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - The United States government on Friday gave the Kenyan Navy six boats to patrol its coastline and help combat "insecurity and terrorism".

"This is timely in view of the heightened concerns by Kenya about the potential exploitation of the Kenyan coast by criminal groups and terrorists," U.S. Ambassador Michael Ranneberger said in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa.

"The project valued at $3 million is a major initiative to help the government of Kenya combat insecurity and terrorism."

The U.S. government has been helping African governments train and equip local troops to combat militants who Washington believes want to create safe havens in the continent's vast and hard-to-govern regions.

Security experts say Kenya's porous borders and coastline could be exploited by militants posing a threat to U.S. interests and looking for a gateway into the continent through Kenya.

I ONLY HOPE KENYA WILL NOT BE ANOTHER RAWANDA
